Dear internet, I hope that you’re not getting sick of my posts yet because they’re going to keep on coming and they’re going to keep on getting better. Today, I have some music to tell you guys about. There is a lovely record label called Western Vinyl who have some really awesome artists to share with the world (check them out here) such as Here We Go Magic and Dirty Projectors. Well, I’m going to tell you about three artists that you may not have heard of, that you need to hear of.
Secret Cities
I love this band. They are dreamy and somewhat poppy and they sort of sound like Grizzly Bear. They’re kind of a hard band to describe but they’re amazing. Secret Cities started when the two founders were only 15 and you can tell they’ve definitely been working on their sound for a while. Please watch this video of them and if you’re still not convinced to listen to them, I’m going to throw your spirit animal into a lake. They’ll be touring Europe over the next month, supporting Toro y Moi on some shows. Some of their tour dates:
May 14 London, UK @ Hoxton Bar & Kitchen
May 16 Northampton, UK @ Labour Club
May 17 Hull, UK @ The New Adelphi
May 18 Glasgow, Scotland @ The Captain’s Rest
May 22 Tilburg, Netherlands @ Fest
May 24 Laussane, Switzerland @ La Romandie with Toro y Moi
May 25 Basel, Switzerland @ Hinterhof with Toro y Moi
Nat Baldwin
This guy is super good at violin. He is also from Dirty Projectors but he’s doing some solo stuff at the moment. I have his People Changes EP and it is excellent. He reminds me of Owen Pallett and his voice is very unique. He actually recently played at Bey’s in Columbia, SC and I heard it was an excellent show. Check him out on his tour right now:
May 11 Boston @ MA @ Whitehaus
May 12 Kittery @ ME @ Buoy Gallery
May 13 Bar Harbor @ ME @ Lompoc
Jun 19 Ithaca @ NY @ Castaways w/ Chad Van Gaalen
Jun 20 Washington @ DC @ Rock and Roll Hotel w/ Chad Van Gaalen
Jun 22 Cambridge @ MA @ TT The Bear’s w/ Chad Van Gaalen
Jun 23 Montreal @ QC @ II Motore w/ Chad Van Gaalen
Jul 21 Buffalo @ NY @ The Ninth Ward
Callers
Lastly is Callers. I only have their single Ringers but I’m really digging it. The singer reminds me of a mixture of Karen O and Feist. They have a fast, poppy sound and their most recent album Life of Love got a 7.6 on Pitchfork (which is really good for Pitchfork). Their June 4th show is in the same venue that both Donald Glover and Sleigh Bells will be playing over the next few weeks.
Jun 4 Brooklyn, NY @ Music Hall of Williamsburg w/ Yellow Ostrich, Wildbirds & Peacedrums
Jul 6 Cambridge, MA @ Club Passim
Jul 24 Cleveland, OH @ Beachland Tavern w/ Nat Baldwin
Jul 26 Pittsburgh, PA @ Brillobox w/ Nat Baldwin
Jul 27 Baltimore, MD @ Metro Gallery
Jul 28 Philadelphia, PA @ World Cafe Live Upstairs w/ Nat Baldwin
