We were heartbroken when R.E.M. announced their break up after 31 years together mainly because we wanted one more tour from them. While their albums have been falling off ever so slightly since New Adventures in Hi Fi (some would argue Up), their live performances never faltered. That’s also not to say that there weren’t a lot of bright spots on all of the Post-Berry albums.
To capture all 31 years, R.E.M. has decided to release a greatest hits album that includes 40 songs from the IRS and Warner Bros. years, two of which are previously unreleased. They have released one last single aptly titled “Where We All Go Back To Where We Belong” which can be heard exclusively at Rolling Stone. Fortunately the new single finds them in true form with a song that sounds like a happy, gentle farewell.
