Last week Portals Music debuted a new track from Gremlins, and deemed the synth hook in “Maim My Bitch” as “one of the most catchy synth hooks ever.” The project, which is based out of Columbia, SC, is made up of Mat Cothran (Coma Cinema/Elvis Depressedly), Patrick Jeffords (Toro y Moi/Kid Trails), Sam Ray (Ricky Eat Acid), and Katie Lee (Braids).
On this EP, the group moved from the bedroom to Page Chilton’s house to record five experimental songs, washed out with drugs and hooky synth lines. What stands out most? The bass line in “Maim my Bitch” is straight sexy and Cothran’s Bright Eyes esque vocal delivery and melody in “JonBenet” work as a reliable vehicle for his dark pessimistic lyrics. As a whole the EP does a fine job of combining the sound of each individual member, including Jeffords grooving bass alongside Sam Ray’s beats, which are a little more clean and punchy compared to some of his past releases.
The five songs were produced by Columbian’s Matt Morrison and Page Chilton, with additional guitar on “Louder” from home town hero David Adedokun.
