Listen to WUSC

College radio is really hit or miss and WUSC 90.5 is not really any different.  If you tune in at the wrong time you end up listening to some crazy experimental stuff that might make you immediately turn the channel.  So here is how you are going to get around that.  90.5 does play good music you just have to know what days and what times to listen!  Here are a couple of shows that I have picked out for us to listen to.  I’ll be honest, I haven’t listened to WUSC regularly for a couple of years, but I am starting back now.  I’ll probably listen online and it would be cool if I could go back and listen to a show that I missed.  Is that possible?

If the schedule at WUSC’s website is correct, here are some shows that I have chosen to listen to.

Saturdays from 12-2 The Locals Show with Pat Wall.

Genre-Local Music

While WUSC-FM Columbia is very involved with our local music scene and very proud of the fact that we’re the only radio station in Columbia that plays local music, we’re especially proud of DJ Pat Wall’s Locals Only show. No genre is excluded from the locals show. It’s a great mix of Rock, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk, Folk, Classical and more to showcase the diverse sounds and talent from this stretch of the country. It’s also your best source for hearing about bands that will be playing in the area.

The Columbia Beet

Friday’s 4-6

The Columbia Beet is an online music zine and weekly radio program that seeks to cast a spotlight on the diverse and thriving music scene in Columbia and its surrounding boroughs. The Beet began as a music column in the local weekly Columbia City Paper, but has since moved its primary base of operations to the University of South Carolina student run WUSC radio station. In addition to this move to the airwaves, The Beet has also expanded its internet presence to include social networking sites (i.e. MySpace, FaceBook) and our current homepage at Blogger. In the end, our hope is to simply spread the word and support Columbia’s vibrant music scene and try to get others to do the same.

So Sarah and Cayla had their first show Saturday night from 10-12. If I was smart I would have listened to their show instead of watching us get beat by LSU.  They plan to span three genres, which are to be decided, but are going to focus on indie rock. They are also Jazz fans as Sarah is in the Carolina Alive jazz ensemble so that will probably be genre dos.  The third genre can be a surprise for all of us.

Sarah and Cayla are both active in the Columbia music scene so they know what’s up.  I trust them to play me some good music:)

Sarah Kobos

Cayla Fralick

I’m sure there are plenty of other shows I should tune in to so email or comment on here some other shows to check out.  I’ll add them to the post.  Oh yeah and check out Bakari Lebby in that picture at the top of the page.  Love the Undaunted remix.
