Kris Allen is stopping in Charleston for a night, playing the Music Farm with Matt MacKelcan.
Who can forget the eighth season of American Idol, the battle of genres and style that blazed between flaming rocker Adam Lambert and sweet pop-singer-songwriter Kris Allen? I’m positive I wasn’t alone in watching Kris surrounded by falling confetti while victoriously crooning “No Boundaries” with tears running down my face.
Since Idol, Allen has released two studio albums and a Christmas EP, the first of which achieved significant recognition. This self titled LP included his trademark tracks “Live Like We’re Dying” and his rendition of Kanye West’s “Heartless,” which was included as a bonus track and may or may not still hold a spot in my most listened to playlist. His sound has been compared to that of Carolina Liar, Augustana, even holding some elements of Maroon 5.
In typical American Idol fashion, the eighth season’s runner up Adam Lambert held onto his spot light while Allen seemed to fade away. But fading away from the limelight does not mean idleness; such is the case with Kris Allen. In between the releases of his freshman and sophomore albums, he began to fight in favor of music education, hoping to share the joy of music with underprivileged youths who wouldn’t be exposed to it otherwise.
Head out to the Music Farm on Saturday to see this philanthropic songbird melt the hearts of young women and men alike, and be sure to check out Allen’s performance of “Heartless,” linked above.
